Official Report And Prices

The official report on the eale, issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers* Association in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, says that the offering of 25,073 bales, which included 5917 bales from the commission. was drawn mainly from Canterbury and Marlborough, and comprised mainly Corriedale and halfbred fleece with a smaller percentage of Merino and crossbred.

The wool generally reflected the adverse seasonal conditions experienced, and although sound in staple, showed more dust and was generally not as well grown as usual. However, wool from the Canterbury foothills and high country came forward in better condition than normal and was in reasonably good order.

The offering generally was slightly finer than usual and this could also be attributed to seasonal conditins. The gen eral standard of shed-classed wool was reasonable, but some lines were too mixed in quality and this wks more apparent in the smaller lines and finer wools. Oddments were generally of good colour, but were frequently faulted by vegetable matter.

There was good general comE etition from a full bench of uyers. The Continent was the principal buyer, with support from Eastern Europe and local mills. Bradford was moderately active. >

The market, compared with the recent Dunedin sale, was generally unchanged. Merinos were in sellers* favour, extra fine halfbreds were very firm, and fine halfbreds were in buyers* favour. Medium and strong good style halfbreds were firm, and average to inferior qualities, although irregu lar. were generally unchanged. Fine, medium and coarse crossbreds, second shears and oddments were very firm.
