OBITUARY Lady Thornton

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 8. The death occurred in Wellington last night of Lady Thornton, wife of the Chief of Defence Staff (LieutenantGeneral Sir Leonard Thornton). Formerly Miss Jan Sloman, of Wellington, Lady Thornton served as a V.A.D. in the Middle East during the Second World War. She married Sir Leonard Thornton in Haifa in 1942. In 1958, Sir Leonard Thornton was appointed chief military planning officer for

S.E.A.T.O. in Bangkok, and the family lived there until he returned to New Zealand to take up bis appointment as Chief of the General Staff. Lady Thornton accompanied her husband on many of his travels in Asia. She took an active interest in both the Wellington and the national Y.W.C.A., the Red Cross and the women’s section of the Returned Services Association. She is survived by her husband, three sons and a sister.
