More Juniors In Tennis

Remarkable entries are being received for junior tennis competitions this season.

The junior inter-club grades will begin on October 18 with 32 more teams than last year —124 compared with 92—and some of the matches will have to be played at club and school courts.

Twenty-three of the 25 clubs affiliated to the association are represented and

clubs such as Fendalton and Edgeware have 15 and 14 teams entered, respectively. Entries, with last season’s figures in parenthesis, are: Boys—under 18: 16 (13); under 15: 32 (22); under 13: 23 (14). Girls—under 18: 18 (15); under 15: 23 (19); under 13: 11 (10). The under 13 sections will play at Wilding Park in the mornings, under 18 at Wilding Park in the afternoons, and under 15 on outside courts.

For junior ranking matches, which began last Sunday, more than 130 nominations

were received and these have to be reduced to 96.

One of the main purposes of ranking will be the selection of toe Slazenger and Howe Shield teams. Under the changed system this season, four boys’ teams and four girls’ teams will be found by elimination matches in October and November to represent the South Island zone at the round-robin tournament in January. Because of Canterbury’s strength it may not have to play elimination matches but may go straight through to toe round-robin tournament
