Steam Society Headquarters
By subdividing an area of land at Harewood for lease to organisations, the North Canterbury Catchment Board was planning to make the district the play centre of Christchurch, said the newly elected president of the Canterbury Steam Preservation Society (Mr R. Schneider) at its first annual meeting. The society had been given a lease of about 27 acres for use as its headquarters, Mr Schneider said. No plans had been made yet. but It was hoped to have working displays of steam and traction engines. Mr Schneider said it was hoped to start the preparation of the land soon after Christmas. Other organisations, including a smallbore rifle club, were to lease the surrounding area. Officers elected were:— Patron, Mr A. R. Guthrey: president, Mr R. Schneider: vice-president, Mr R. Hawkins; secretary; Mr R. Musson: treasurer, Mr R. Gibbs: committee, Messrs B. Curragh, G. Calder, A. Greer, A. Hassall, D. Pollick and H. Feather.
