One Dead, Six Injured
A young man was killed and four girls and two youths were injured when a large car failed to take the S bend on the Main South Road at the railway crossing near the Selwyn River and struck the warning light standard and a sign post at 8.45 pjn. yesterday. The car was wrecked.
AH the persons in the car, which was travelling towards Christchurch, live in Timaru.
The dead man was Roy Barnes, aged 22, of 24 Oxford Street.
The left side of the car from the front seat was almost torn off and the right front of the ear was extensively damaged. The vehicle finished up on its wheels facing the way from which it had been coming. Two Christchurch St John ambulances brought the injured to the Christchurch Hospital. One ambulance was sent originally and when it
reached the scene a radio call was sent for a second ambulance.
Those injured are:— Angu. MacKenzie, aged 20, of 61 Tyne Street Mary Hamilton, aged 19, of 55 Heaton Street. Shirley Anne Seyb, aged 18, of 33 McDonald Street. Eileen Vivienne Seyb, aged 17, of 33 McDonald Street. Tony Cantwell, aged 17, of 38 Oxford Street. Lynda Joyce Gardyne, of 7 Clyde Street. The accident occurred about 22 miles south of Christchurch. It attracted a large crowd and the ambulance drivers thanked members of the public for the assistance they gave the injured persons.
