Mental Health And The Church

Sir,—lt was heartening to ; read the recommendation put forward by toe North Canterbury Methodist Synod regarding toe care and support of mentally ill patients, even after discharge from hospital, and it is to be hoped that this suggestion will be adopted as a practical measure rather'

than an idealistic theory. Re cently I was unfortunate enough to experience a partial mental breakdown and, presuming that my church would assist me, approached its members for help and reassurance, only to be met with an attitude of total indifference which clearly indicated that I should attempt to “pull myself together.” As I had been an active parishioner, this experience had a most traumatic effect It appeared that the motto of this church group was, “Do as we say, not as we do.”—Yours, etc., PHILBERT.
