All-Night National Programme
Sir, —Mr Robertson’s recent comment that “Classical Corner” was dropped some time ago at the request of regular listeners to the all-night programme who stated that they wanted to be kept awake, not put to sleep, demands explanation. Who were they? How many? Were they anonymous? What proof is there that they were regular listeners? Were their radios licensed (at a time when thousands were not)? Were they teen-agers trying to keep awake when they ought to have been asleep Why did the NE.B.C. respect their views and treat regular listeners to “Classical Corner” with such contempt? Does the NJZ.B.C. consider, in presenting as at present an all-night programme devoid of any material suited for the serious listener, that it is fulfilling its duty to see that the programme maintains a proper balance in its subject matter and a high general standard of quality?—Yours, etc,, PAUL MALING. August 22, 1969. {Mr J. Robertson, radio manager for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, replies: “Our records show that we have received no requests other than Mr Maling’s for the reintroduction of ‘Classical Comer’.”]
