Still Lower Voting Age Considered

WELLINGTON, August 27. Two days after 20-year-olds were given the right to vote at General Elections, Parliament’s Petitions Committee today recommended that the Government give consideration to a petition calling for votes for 18-year-olds.
However, the committee’s i recommendation means that , the matter is unlikely to be taken any further by the Government at present Ac- ; tion is usually only taken on petitions receiving a “most : favourable consideration” or ; a "favourable consideration” i recommendation. I The Electoral Amendment • Act, which gives the votes
to 20-year-oids, received the Royal Assent on Monday. The petition was signed by 11,000 people and was sponsored by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt). Five members of the vote-at-18 committee, from Auckland, who organised the petition, presented submissions to the Petitions Committee last Wednesday.
