Entry To State Forests

(Contributed bp th* Toreet Service) 1. Over the last 20 years the Forest Service has received more and more cooperation from the public in protecting forests from fire, which is still the greatest enemy. 2. Our forests are becoming increasingly important as timber producers for local and overseas markets and have vital roles in conserving water and offering recreation. 3. This co-operation has allowed the Forest Service to adopt a more liberal attitude towards entry into State Forests. The forest walk in Hanmer has become very popular with some 20,000 visitors already this year. An amenity area is being developed at Balmoral Forest, immediately north of the Hurunui River bridge, and a route, for cars only, is planned through Ashley Forest In South Canterbury walking tracks are formed in Raincliff Forest and a stopping place is available for caravans at Pioneer Park. 4. Complementing the National Parks system. State Forest parks are being set aside for public use. The first in Canterbury is the

Cratgieburn Forest Park between Porter’s Pass and Lake Pearson. A second park is planned for Lake Sumner. Roads inside these parks have yet to be formed or upgraded to caravan standard, however. 5. Those who travel through forested areas, whether State Forest, National Parks, Scenic Reserves or privately-owned plantations, are asked to be careful with fire. In many places picnic areas are provided. Most travellers will prefer to use their caravan cooking facilities, but if they do decide to have open fires a few commonsense rules apply. If provided, fireplaces should be used. It these are not available select a spot of bare ground near water. During a closed fire season, which is proclaimed by a Rural Fire Authority, usually the Forest Service or a County Council, the lighting of open fires or the use of thermettes, is prohibited. 6. If a fire is started and spreads every attempt should be made to put it out immediately. If it cannot be controlled the nearest Forest Service or County office should be advised without delay.
