SHARK NETS
Govt Support Disappoints The New Zealand LifeSaving Association has expressed disappointment at the extent of the Government's financial support for shak nets on beaches in New Zealand. Shark nets at St Clair and St Kilda beaches, Dunedin, were extremely important the annual report said. Three fatalities from shark attacks had occurred on those beaches, two in the last four years. The Government was not prepared to give money to import and set shark nets and offered only a 20 per cent subsidy from the Golden Kiwi lottery fund. It was hoped that local government and business associations in Dunedin would raise money for the nets next season. The cost of setting nets in Australia had been met by the state governments. Four nets would cost $l2OO. They would have to be lifted each day, which would cost an additional $BOO each season.
