PIGEONS SHOT

Man Before Court (N.Z. Press Association) KAITAIA, Aug. 27. A man charged with shooting two protected native pigeons said in the Magistrate’s Court Kaitaia, that he wanted to send them to his son serving with New Zealand troops in Vietnam. Pleading guilty yesterday to a charge of killing absolutely protected wild life at Mangamuku Gorge on June 26, James Harris, aged 49, a sickness beneficiary with 11 children, was fined §35 by Mr J. B. Bergin, S.M. The Magistrate also ordered the forfeiture of two shot guns seized from the defendant's car and instructed the police to dispose of the birds. Harris had earlier offered to read to the Court a letter from his son seeking some pigeons. Harris said his son was in the front line killing people while he had only killed pigeons. Sergeant B. J. Baker, prosecuting, said Harris told a Wildlife inspector that the pigeons were fat and that he wanted some Maori kai. Mr Bergin said that only the defendant’s personal circumstances saved him from a heavier fine.
