GIRL'S FIRST ATTEMPT WINS DESIGN CONTEST
A 14-year-old St Mary’s College pupil, Anne Cunningham, won the Canterbury area Anal of the New Zealand Tea Council’s designing and dressmaking contest for secondary school girls in Christchurch yesterday. In her first attempt at designing Anne created a dress and jacket in Canadian “linen.” The cherry-coloured outfit was bound in navy, which outlined the V-necked jacket and formed three bands, finished with buckles, around it Her fresh, young dress fea- ' tured three pleats each side, a high belt fastening with a buckle at the back, and white and navy cuffs and collar. The judge and contest organiser, Mrs Tam Hill, congratulated the winner on her fashion sense—“the buckles were very good, mod details” —and the excellence of the finish to the sewing. “You have combined a really youthful look in a fashion garment. The little dress has the fresh look designers of youthful clothes are looking for,” she said.
Mrs Hill also congratulated St Mary’s College on the standard of their entries. The college won the first prize last year, and seven of the eight finalists yesterday were pupils of Sister M. de Pazza. The machine the college was awarded yesterday was the fourth it has won in sewing, con tests. Christina Berry, of St Mary’s, was second, Janet Lawrence, of St Margaret’s College, third, and Alice Klaver, St Mary’s, fourth. Christina's outfit was especially modern—a small floral pattern pair of flared slacks and bolero teamed with a lime green shirt which was finished with a belt effect at the waist On her long hair she wore an Indian headband. Brown suede cloth formed Janet’s bolero top and belted skirt, worn with a sheer, bluepatterned blouse. A welltailored, straight-leg trouser suit entered by Alice, could also be worn with a matching mini-skirt Entries in this year’s contest, for which there are prizes valued at $3OOO, totalled more than 5000. They were judged for originality,
