RATE LEVY BY BOARD
Rise Concerns Council
The Riccarton Borough Council is concerned about the continued increases in the rate levied by the Christchurch Transport Board. Cr B. S, Lester, said at the council’s monthly meeting that he felt very strongly about the matter. Such increases could not go for much longer. Last year the Transport Board lost $480,000 and this year it was budgeting for a loss of $520,000. If the coundll tried to budget for losses of such magnitude it would soon be in trouble. Mr Lester urged the council to voice its concern. The
council will send a letter to the board. The council passed the new rate. The council passed a motion approving and giving support to the proposal to have late night shopping on Thursday in Riccarton. The application has yet to be received from the businessmen’s association.
The mayoral honorarium was fixed at $BOO a year, as previously and that of council lore at $3 for each meeting they attend. The council decided to join the Clean Air Society. The following annual grants were approved: Christchurch Civic Music Orchestra Foundation $120; the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association $10; and the Royal Humane Society $2. Because estimates had been finalised the council was unable to make a grant to the McKenzie Free Kindergarten this year but instead placed $25 on the estimates for next year to help defray costs of an adventure playground.
