Press Law In Greece
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) ATHENS, August 27.
Greece’s Army-backed Government has refused to withdraw a draft press law although publishers and journalists have described it as unacceptable, usually reliable sources said.
In a. meeting between a minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr lonnis Agathaghelou, and the executive committee of the Union of Athens Journalists tonight, the Government defended its draft and called on the journalists to submit their amendments to it, the sources said. The Government issued a 180-article draft over the week-end which restores press freedom, abolished when the Army seized power in April, 1967, but introduces stringent controls and severe penalties for a number of offences. Reporters and editors would have to register with the Press Ministry.
