Obituary MR W.G. TURNBULL

Mr William George Turnbull, who died recently, was born in Wellington in 1906. He was the only son of Mr William H. Turnbull, of Wellington, and Hilda Jane Turnbull, a daughter of the Hon. Walter Johnston.

He was educated at Crovdon Preparatory School, Days Bay, and Christ’s College. A graduate of King’s College, Cambridge, he was for a time with Metropolitan Vickers in Manchester. He returned to New Zealand in 1930 to join the family firm of Johnston and Company, becoming managing director in the post-war years. He was chairman of directors of the Victoria Laundry and a director of T. and W. Young, Ltd.

Mr Turnbull served with the R.N.ZA.F. in the Second World War. He had a keen interest in the Air League, of which he was treasurer.

In the field of amateur wireless telegraphy he was a pioneer and made valuable contributions in the 1931 Napier earthquake and in the epic flight of F. C. (now Sir Francis) Chichester across the Tasman.

He had a keen interest in sport, especially golf, fishing, lawn tennis and Rugby football.

Mr Turnbull was a member of the Wellington Club, the Wellesley Club, the Wellington Racing Club, and the Wellington Golf Club. Mrs Turnbull is a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs A E. Whyte, of Wellington, and is Chief Commissioner of the Girl Guides Association. Their only daughter, Angela Whitrow, lives in England.
