“Study Need Urgent” The problem was now of some Urgency as to where the city was to go to, said the City Engineer (Mr P. G. Secular), when he told a meeting of the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority yesterday that forecasts indicated an “over spill” of 30,000 in the city’s population within 17 years, “This is equivalent to a city the size of Timaru,” said Mr Secular, commenting as chairman of the authority’s sub-committee set up to go into problems raised by the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board’s adjournment for its hearing of submissions on the authority’s scheme re-1 view. The authority agreed with sub-committee recommendations that, as a result of adjustments, 1028 acres in the original review should be excluded, and 824 acres brought into the urban fence, giving an increase of 405 acres of urban land. The sub-committee said it had considered adding 490 acres at Styx and Yaldhurst, but because of soils and airport restrictions, uncertainty as to developments In the eastern suburbs and the Burwood plantations, this should be deferred, for review in 18 months. The chairman (Mr G. D. Griffiths) said the proposals were being discussed with the councils concerned, and would be reported back so that the Appeal Board hearing could, resume.
