Canterbury Schools Successful

SOCCER Two Canterbury teams, Christchurch B.H.S. and Linwood H.S., yesterday reached the semifinals of national inter-second-ary schools soccer tournaments in the North Island. Gisborne With its third successive victory, Christchurch won its section of the tournament at Gisborne, the only school with an unbeaten record, and will play Gisborne B.H.S, today. The other semi-final is between Auckland Grammar and Mt Albert. Results:— Section A: Auckland Grammar 8, Whakatane H.S. 1; Christchurch B.H.S. 10, Lytton H.S. 0; Christchurch 3. Auckland 2; Lytton 5, Whakatane 1. Section B: Gisborne B.H.S. 4, Waitaki B.H.S. 1; Shirley B.H.S. 1. Mt Albert Grammar 1: Shirley 5. Waitaki 2; Mt Albert 2. Gisborne 0.

Wellington Linwood qualified for the semi-finals with Rongotai College, Takapuna Grammar, and Tawa College in the tournament at Wellington. Results:—

Second round: Takapuna 2, Cashmere H.S. 4: Linwood 9, Mt Roskill 1; Rongotai 4, Mana College 0; Wellington College 3, Tawa 5.

Third Round.—Rongotai 1, Linwood 0; Mana 3, Mt Roskill S; Wellington 1, Takapuna 11; Tawa 3, Cashmere 2. Oamaru Canterbury and Otago are the only unbeaten teams in the South Isrand under 12 soccer tournament, and their meeting will likely decide the title. Yesterday’s results:— Canterbury 3, South Canterbury 0; North Otago B 0, South Otago 6: North Otago A 6, Eastern South 0; Otago 5, Marlborough 0; North Otago A 2, Nelson 1; Otago 6, Eastern Southland 0; South Canterbury 6, North Otago B 1; Southland 0. HOCKEY Tauranga Christchurch B.H.S. and Linwood H.S. teams also had successes yesterday in the hockey tournament at Tauranga, each winning its section and qualifying for the quarter-finals. Linwood had a good game with Whangarei H.S., leading three times but being pegged back on each occasion for the match to end in a 3-3 draw.

Christchurch B.H.S. had a disappointing game with Palmerston North 8.H.5., recording a rather unconvincing, 3-0, win, and St Andrew’s College recorded its only win, defeating Katikati College, 3-1. The other quarter-finalists are Kamo H.S., Auckland Grammar, Whangarei, Kuranui College, Wellington H.S. and Tauranga Boy’s College. Only Christchurch and Auckland Grammar have won all their games.

Westlake Boys’ High School (Auckland) was awarded a penalty stroke which hit a goal post and, accordingg to the King 5 s High School team, which lodged the protest, rolled away from the goal. The score in this match was 3-2 to Westlake against King’s. If the protest is upheld, Ashburton College will draw level with Westlake as it has had a loss to Westlake’s two draws. Westlake beat Ashburton, 1-0, to take the lead in the tournament. Results:—
