CHOOSING FOUR HOME
So you want a house and are trying to decide when, where, what, and how. There is no question that, in keepmg with all other goods and services, building costs are rising. It is to your advantage then that “when” is now! Where is of major importance, as for most of us a home is our biggest single investment and we must protect this investment choosing location wisely. It is apparent that the place to buy is where most people want to live; that is where houses sell readily and at high prices—where people take a pride in their homes and the environment and people are pleasant. “What" covers two points. Firstly your own requirements—number of bedrooms, living areas, facilities, etc. The second question to decide is —new or secondhand. Most informed people will agree that there Is too high a premium placed on half-worn curtains, carpets and linos of another’s choosing. How much better to make your first expense your last and have everything new for a lesser over-all price! Remember too, you pay stamp duty on the section only when buying a new home—a saving more than sufficient to lay out your section in the choicest shrubs. “What” leads logically to “how” and it should be made quite clear that you must have some money of your own. How much depends on the type of house you require. The difference between cash and cost must come from a lending institution and all look more favourably on a new home than a used one when deciding on advances. There remains just one problem. If your need is very urgent you may not be able to wait the few months necessary to have your home built. However, Canterbury’s leading home builders, Maurice R.
