BUS ROUTE EXTENSION
Board To See Area An extension of the Cashmere bus route to provide a service to Bowenvale Avenue was not recommended by the works and traffic committee of the Christchurch Transport Board, but after Messrs R. H' Stillwell and F. S. Blogg had proposed that the board inspect the area the committee agreed to further consideration. The Heathcote County Council had asked for the extension, the committee said, and there had been a petition from the residents of Bowenvale Avenue and Landsdowne Terrace. To extend either the Cashmere or Beckenham routes would mean the provision of an extra bus and the running of considerable extra mileage each year, which, for the 64 regular daily passengers who said they would use the service, would not be warranted. The main residential part of the Bowenvale Avenue and Landsdowne Terrace area was within the catchment area of either of the two existing routes. “The board is turning down too many requests for extensions,” Mr Stillwell said. “A public service is run whether a route pays or not I doubt if there is one route in our whole area that is paying.” The acting chairman (Mr S. E. Boanas) said he would agree with Mr Stillwell that there should be a board inspection of the area because this had been the practice in the past when extensions were sought.
