Both classes were masterpieces of the steam era: not only were they excellent performers, but also they typify the image of a well designed steam locomotive. Canterbury has for many years seen a great deal of both types of engine, and it is not only the enthusiast who views their passing with regret. Considering the narrow gauge of railway tracks in this country—3ft 6in, compared, for example, wjth 4ft Bjin in Australia~and taking into account the severe gradients, numerous tunnels and bridges, these two venerable giants of New Zealand railway history achieved remarkable performances.
