U.S. Judge Nominated
fN.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright! SAN CLEMENTE (California), August 19. President Nixon yesterday nominated a South Carolina . judge, Mr Clement F. Hayns- ■ worth, to fill a vacancy on the . United States Supreme Court, , and immediately ran into stiff opposition from liberals and civil rights groups. Judge Haynsworth, a 56-year-old moderate conservative, was appointed to the Fourth Circuit Court of J Appeals by President Eisenhower in 1957. He was named head of the Court, which sits in a number of Southern : states, in 1964. Negro leaders, such as Mr Roy Wilkins of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, and Mr Whitney Young, of the Urban League, alleged that Judge Haynsworth’s rulings in civil rights cases had marked him as a segregationist A Republican Senator, Mr Jacob Javits, said that the nomination caused him “grave concern,” and other liberals echoed this view.
