Probation For Woman On 62 Charges

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, August 21.

A woman who, the police alleged, had made 62 false statements to the Social Security Department was placed on probation for two years and ordered to make restitution of $BO3 when she appeared in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today.

Marice Louise Power, aged 39, a van driver, was represented by Mr H. Fulton. Power had earlier pleaded

guilty to 62 charges which related to offences between October, 1967, and April, 1969. She told the police that she made the false statements so that she could continue to obtain the unemployment benefit and supplementary assistance.

Mr E. F. Rothwell S.M., said this type of offence would normally warrant a term of imprisonment. “However, your children would be the ones that would suffer,” he said, in placing her on probation. The Magistrate said Power should regard herself as fortunate that she had three children.
