' Spy’ Trials In Iraq
(N.ZP.AReuKr—Copvrleht) JERUSALEM, Aug. 21. Israel has made an urgent appeal to the United Nations Secretory-General (U Thant), asking him to intervene on behalf of Jews in Iraq facing the death penalty on charges of spying for‘lsrael. The appeal has been sent by the Israeli Foreign Minister (Mr Abba Ebaa), who described the accusations as “absolutely groundless and slanderous.” A Bagdad announcement on Monday said that 12 Iraqis—nine Christians, two Jews and a Moslem —had been committed for trial by the Revolutionary Command Council on charges of spying. Mr Eban's message said he felt that the danger to the Jews in Iraq was now at its greatest. “Scores of innocent Jews are imprisoned, and thousands of others are oppressed and face mortal danger," he said. From Jerusalem it is reported that fire broke out this morning in the Al Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam's holy shrines, and that smoke rose hundreds of feet over the walled city.
