RARE AWARD
The presentation to W.0.l H. James of the rare award of an Army colour, was the highlight of the prizegiving held on the final day o fthe New Zealand Army’s inter-district sports tournament at Burnham yesterday.
W.0.1 James, who is R.S.M. of 2 R.N.Z.1.R., Christchurch, has been prominent in Rugby and cricket, and has represented New Zealand Army at home and in Malaysia. He has been active in forming and coaching teams in both sports, and extended his activities to coaching New Zealand schoolboys and Malaysian Rugby players. His citation for the award covered four foolscap pages. FIFTH SUCCESS Southern Military District won the Command Trophy for most points in all events on the final day of the tournament. It was S.M.D.’s fifth Success in the competition since the present trophy was introduced in 1960. Southern scored 35 j points,
Waiouru 27, Central 25J, and Northern 22. In the final contests yesterday, Southern won the badminton and Northern the Rugby. The Adjutant-General of the N.Z. Army (Brigadier R. McK. Patterson) presented trophies and blazer pockets to the successful sportsmen. Results were:— Rugby.—N.M.D. 8. S.M.D. 3:' C.M.D. 17 t Waiouru 8. Final placing*: N.M.D. 1, S.M.D. 2< Badminton.—S.M.D. e, N.M.D--4; C.M.D. 7. Waiouru 3. Final placings: S.M.D. 1, N.M.D. 2, Trophy winner* were:—Tiny Hill Cup (Rugby), N.M.D.; Captain Aldridge Cup (*occer)j S.M.D. and Waiouru (equal); I Gaile Holland Bowl (women** basketball), Waiouru; Keith Ingham Memorial Cup (men’s basketballs Waiouru; Marshall Cup (badminton), S.M.D.; Captain Wilkinson Cup (golf)a C.M.D. and Waiouru (equal).
