TENNIS OPEN

U.S. Team May Play (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. “This is really good news for us,” said the chairman of the promotions committee of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association (Mr J. E. Robson), commenting last evening on the announcement from Australia that negotiations to bring the American Davis Cup team to the Victorian and New South Wales open tournaments early next year have been completed. Mr Robson added: "The New Zealand Open is directly after these two in Australia, from January 27 to February 1, and we will probably be able to get some of the Americans, including Arthur Ashe, here to play.” Mr Robson said the Australian association’s decision to drop the professional troupe under the promoter, Mr G. Mac Cal), from its plans should not affect the New Zealand open.

“We have sent a letter to Mr Mac Call inviting a number of his players to take part but so far we have received no reply,” said Mr Robson. “Even if he bypasses Australia, he may still accept our invitation.” Mr Robson has already received an assurance from a rival promoter, Mr R. Briner, that the Australians, A. D. Roche and J. D. Newcombe, and the Dutchman, T. S. Okker, will be taking part in the New Zealand open.
