More Troops Flown In
LONDON, Aug. 15. The airlift of a further 600 British troops, who were alerted at dawn to act as reinforcements for the infantrymen already in Northern Ireland, began this afternoon. Britain has about 3000 troops in bameks and training camps throughout Ulster, but only 300 of these were called out last night, for law-and-order duties in Londonderry. A brief Ministry of Defence announcement, issued soon after dawn, said that Army commanders in Northern Ireland wished “to plug the gap” left by the deployment of the 300 infantrymen in Londonderry. “This is normal procedure when garrison troops are committed in this way,” the formal statement said. “Six hundred men of the 3rd Battalion, Light Infantry, based in Plymouth, will begin to fly from the United Kingdom this afternoon in Royal Air Force aircraft of Air Support Command.”
