MILLARD’S RETURN
Baskethall Rep. Team The Bft Sin Y.M.C.A. centre R. Millard, has regained his place in the Canterbury men’s basketball team for the national invitation tournament, which will begin in Tauranga on September I. Millard has been below form for most of this season and has not played for Canterbury since the Canadian Goodwill tournament at the beginning of the season. However, he has been showing increasing ability in representative practices, and a fine performance in the club game last Saturday prompted the selector-coach (Mr G. D. Dempsey) to include him in his team of 10.
The New Zealand selector (Mr C. Agnew, of Hamilton) has intimated that he would like another look at Millard and this is another reason why it would have been difficult to leave him out. Millard will be used as the understudy centre to J. Utley (University).
Every member of the team which defeated Otago recently has been retained. The only remaining member of the training squad to miss selection is M. Clements (Y.M.C.A.), who was not available for an early match and has been kept out since by the deeds of the second string players he would normally have replaced. Canterbury’s only New Zealand representative in the last decade, C. Morris, withdrew from the squad this week after aggravating a knee injury in last Saturday’s club games. The team is:—J. Culliford (captain), J. Utley, P. Stigley, A. Taylor, T. Guthrie (University), K. Millard, D. Rattray (Y.M.C.A.), K. Luxton, A. Hounsell (Old Boys), I. Day (Checkers-Y-Boys).
