COST OF POWER

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 6. By March 31, the Electricity Department had spent $98,386,646 on the Manapouri power scheme, the department said in its annual report to Parliament. This was only about twothirds of the estimated cost of bringing the first four generators (out of an eventual seven) into operation, but it was well above the $66,900,000 spent on Benmore, the previous most expensive station.

The report added that the Tongariro scheme had so far cost $61,409,626. To March 31 the cost of ail hydro-electric and thermal power stations in service was $474 million, and in addition $238 million had been spent on schemes under construction or planned.
