ERRATIC SHAREMARKET BUT LEADERS STILL RISING

Leading issues continued to rise in a more active sharemarket yesterday, but a number of falling prices made the market steady over all. There were 10 rises and nine falls of 5c or more.

Insurances made further gains, National trading 5c up at 435 c while N.Z.I. and South British each added 2c to close at 422 c and 542 c. Matakana put on 10c to 290 c, but N.Z. Forest ordinary lost 2c to close at 459 c and New Zealand Paper Mills sold 2c down at 138 c. Notable among Christchurch movements were Transport Holdings new, which lost on the theoretical ex-issue price of 177 c, Tekau, up 10c to 230 c, M. O’Brien, up 5c to 52c, and Alliance, which gained 4c to 80c while the notes put on 5c to 79c in Dunedin. Steel and Tube lost 15c in the market to trade at 240 c and Cable Price sold 10c down at 140 c. Stock firms were steady or weak. The overseas Isit exhibited a similar erratic tone, with B. rising 15c to 1545 c but C. losing 35c to 810 c. Dunlop Succeeds (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, August 6.
