(N.Z. P. A .•Reuter—Copyrig ht) The Finnish ear rally driver, T. Makinen, finished second in the eighth stage of the Round Britain powerboat race yesterday, but retained his over-all lead in the 1700-mile event. Winner of the 150-mile eighth stage, from Whitby to Great Yarmouth, was T. Powell, in U.F.O. He clocked 3hr 19mln 27.55ec, and made up 22min on the race leader’s over-all time. Makinen’s boat, Avenger Too, finished in 3hr 41min 34.25ec. Little wind and perfect visibility made conditions nearly perfect, a welcome change from the dense fog, high winds and rough seas of the last three days. The photograph shows Botany Bay Expres.s, driven by K. Schellenberg, leaving a great surging wake during an earlier stage of the race.
Record Run.—The Russian sprinter, Galina Mitrokhina, broke the world record for the women's 200 metres hurdles by two-tenths of a second, recording 26.95ec in a track and field meeting at Odessa.
