Song Prize For Bicentenary

The Kapiti Folk Club, Plimmerton, and the Devour port Folk Club, Auckland, in association with the N.Z.8.C., are offering prizes totalling $l3O. in a songwriting competition for the bicentenary of Captain Cook's larding in New Zealand.

The judges will be Jim Delahunty, Bill Parker and David James, and the first prize of $5O will go to what they consider the best song among the entries. The conditions of the competition are that all songs entered must have original words, although not necessarily original music. There is no limit on the number of songs any author may submit.

Entries, which must be accompanied by a taperecording of the songs, will close on September 1, and the judges will select eight songs for the final at the Gisborne Folk Festival at Labour week-end, where the winners will be announced. AU eight finalists will be included in the N.Z.B.C. broadcast from the concert, and the songs will be submitted to Kiwi Records, which has expressed interest in the competition.

The songs may be in English or Maori, and the sponsors of the competition have put few restrictions on the subject matter—the songs need not be about Captain Cook, or even about his period, but may be on any theme which suits the occasion. The special prize of S5O, offered by the N.Z.8.C., will go to the author of the best song with both original words and original music.
