BIRTHDAY CAKE

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 3. Patrons of the Pukekohe races yesterday were offered free pieces of cake and watched a special Birthday Handicap. The cake, in the shape of a racecourse, complete with miniature horses, was commissioned by the Franklin Racing Club to commemorate the birthday of every New Zealand thoroughbred and standardbred horse.

Measuring 6ft by 2ft, the 2001 b fruit cake contained 550 eggs and 751 b of butter cream icing. It was baked over 10 days at the Intercontinental Hotel, Auckland. The field for the main race, the Motion Handicap, was led out by the former top galloper, Bali Ha’i.
