TABLE TENNIS VICTORY

With B. A. Foster and Mils Y. Fogarty representing New Zealand in the second table tennis test against Australia, Otago stood no chance of defeating Canterbury in the annual contest for the Jarvis Rose Bowl on Saturday night. Canterbury won 18-10.

► The highlight of the men’s t contest was the performance of Otago's G. B. Murphy who i scored wins over J. Armstrong and Ling Nan Ming. Murphy ’ used his powerful loop drive to 1 full advantage against Armstrong to upset his opponent’s defence while Armstrong showed his concern for Murphy s attack by making vain attempts to attack. In the contest against Ling Nan Ming consistency on the part of Murphy was the deciding feature as Ming made numerous mistakes in an attempt to score points with hard, flat drives. Otago sacrificed R. M. Colbert to Armstrong and Ming, in an attempt to score wins in the iottom bracket, but V. N. Irightwell and W. T. Scott were both equal to the occasion and both players beat G. J. Williams and M. M. Duffy. Canterbury won the women's contest also, 8-4. Mrs J. Green led the team with wins over Mrs R. Sunderland and Miss M. Fogarty, but Canterbury’s Miss B. Taylor found the top bracket too difficult and failed to score a win. Mrs J. Lee showed an improvement over her form in previous representative contests to win both her singles matches, as did Miss M. P. Green. Canterbury won the first contest for the Samson Shield between the lower grade teams of both provinces by winning 40 matches to 20. Results were (Canterbury names first):— MEH Singles.— J.
