Fast Hockey Won By Canterbury

On an unusually-fast ground, Canterbury defeated Wellington, 2-0, before a good crowd in the annual representative fixture. The match was the last big pre-tournament run for both teams, and the managers, Mesdames A Timlin and C. Moffatt, must have been pleased with the improvent shown by their teams.

Wellington took some time to adjust to the dry, fast conditions. Canterbury attacked from the start. J. Mouat, right-inner, netted a high shot off the pads of the goalie, C. Hicks, after a forward rush. Play then settled down for the remainder of the first half. Canterbury players tried to use B. Turbott, the right wing, as a spearhead for their attacks, but she was closely marked by Wellington’s D. Jackson, at left half. Only very deep passes directed at the corner flag gave Turbott a chance to show her speed and long reach. Wellington directed its first-half attacks down the left flank, using E. Holland and C. Roberts, but in turn the Canterbury right-half, A. Rouse, did her job well. Very little play was directed’ through centrefield, Wellington quickly realising the strength of A. McKenna, Canterbury’s captain, at centre-half.

After half-time both teams fielded replacements. Canterbury played J. Fookes at centreforward and L. Rutledge at right inner. Wellington brought on J. Langford at right-half.

Canterbury’s second goal came after L. Bayliss, the left wing, retrieved a deep pass, from close to the corner. She eluded several Wellington players and sent a well-directed flick shot towards the goal from a wide angle. C. Hicks, in goal, blocked the shot, but the rebound went straight to K. McDonald, left-inner. She sent the ball straight to the back of the net. Wellington attacked and narrowly missed scoring on several occasions. The final whistle found them still in possession and on attack. Umpires: Miss G. Bowyer and Mr Bennett. Teams:— Canterbury: J. Mohr, M. Bruhns, L. Drummond, A. Rouse, A. McKenna (captain), J.
