Southlanders Optimistic

Southland vendors had a memorable sale last year, and secured more than $26,000 from nine lots. To the surprise of no-one Mr Murray Day secured top price of the sale—slo, ooo— his yearling filly, by Suminertime, from Yearly. The presence in the catalogue of such a richly-bred youngster ensured that the sale would attract Australian interest and that it would be a notable success. There is no obvious “sale stopper” from Southland or from anywhere else for that matter in this year's catalogue. Rather it should be a sale without marked highs and lows, but one capable of yielding a respectable average from a uniformly good standard of attrac-tively-bred lots. Heartened by the good results from last year's sale. Southlanders have entered freely this year. Mr and Mrs Day’s entries this year include two fillies by NausOri’s sire Golden Plume, one from Leighway. which will be offered In the brood mare section. Mr A. J. Crooks, of Dacre, near Invercargill, was not represented at last year’s sale, but his entries this year will come in for much attention. One of his entries will be the first of the stock of the grand English stayer Lomond to enter a New Zealand sale ring. Lomond, son of Preciptic, was bought by Mr W. E. Hazlett for his Chelandry Stud after he had won 12 races up to two miles in England. The Lomond filly bred by Mr Crooks is from Golden Boa, a daughter of the Irish St Leger winner Cassock, sire of Great Sensation, Millie Small, Cheyenne

and other top flight winners. The Lomond filly’s dam Golden Boa won eight races and is a winner producer; also a close relation of the successful Bellborough fillies Red Bow, Red Scarf, and Red Sash. Mr H. Halligan, of Invercargill, who last year secured $3lOO for a filly by Bellborough from ShangriLa, will this year offer a colt by the same sire from Shangri-La’s dam, Mythic. Shangri-La won 16 races from Riverton to Trentham, at sprints and middle distances and was one of many versatile performers sired by Kurdistan. Hawa is another South-land-based sire being represented for the first time in this year's South Island sale. He was secured for the Chelandry Stud from Lindsay Park in South Australia, and he has a good list of successful two-year-olde and sprinters in Australia.
