Attempt To End Italian Crisis
(N.Z:P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME, July 30. The Christian Democrats today attempted to end Italy’s 25-day-old political crisis with an offer to form a one-party minority government —but it was not clear if they would get the outside support they needed.
The jiarty executive, making the offer after an eighthour meeting, asked for support from its former Centreleft coalition partners. It said that failure would leave no alternative to calling fresh elections. The Prime Ministerdesignate (Mr Mariano Rumor), the Christiain Democrat leader, has so far failed to re-form the Centre-left coalition which resigned on July 5 because of a Socialist split. His party executive early today ruled out another alternative: a two-party coalition between the Christian Democrats and the Left-wing Socialists, which it indicated would not be strong enough to rule effectively.
The Socialists have said that they would not back a one-party government.
