Better For Fruit
Pallet loading was introduced into New Zealand by the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board in 1950. Apart from the savings in freight costs, the system reduced the danger of bruising by cutting down unnecessary handling. At orchards cartons are stacked on pallets, 49 cartons to one pallet, and remain on these pallets en route to the cool store, while in the cool store, and then on the journey to the dockside. The cartons leave the pallets once inside the ship's hold. Two hundred and forty pallets containing 12,000 cartons of apples will be shipped aboard the Shansi on this trip to Hong Kong. By equipping their ships to cope with this kind of unit loading system the China Navigation Company will improve the Apple and Pear Marketing Board’s competitive position in South-East Asia.
