GIVING TO C.O.R.S.O.
Increases In 1969
A record amount of $42,874 has been received by the Christchurch office of C.0.R.5.0. from its annual house-to-house cash appeal held on June 21.
The C.0.R.5.0. organiser for the Canterbury, Westland and Buller area (Mr R. H. French) said that another $22,495 had been received by agents and committees throughout Canterbury and $5994 from those in Westland and Buller. This brought the area collection to $71,363. “This represents about 16c a head of population,” he said. “We are heartened by this excellent response in our silver jubilee year." Mr French said that since the beginning of the year about $90,000 had been given to C.0.R.5.0. in the area, an increase of 45 per cent on that raised at the same time last year and $lO,OOO more than the $80,440 collected for the whole of last year. This included $14,687 raised in the five months before the appeal, the appeal, donations to the Nigerian-Biafran appeal and money sent direct to the national headquarters in Wellington by local persons. The national total was $530,000, compared with $499,000 at the same time last year.
“This 18 per cent increase brings us within sight of our budget figure of $650,000 and offers us the hope of being able to give some assistance to those needy areas overseas whose requests for aid would otherwise have to be declined,” said Mr French. In particular the strong public support gave scope for greater development aid so that C.0.R.5.0. could deal with the causes of hunger as well as provide for necessary relief work, he said.
