TRAWLER LAUNCHED

34ft Craft For Akaroa

A wooden-hulled trawler for service at Akaroa was launched at Lyttelton yesterday afternoon by the floating crane Rapaki. The craft, called Thorkeld, was built by Mr P. Huxford, of Palmer’s Road, New Brighton, for an Akaroa fisherman, Mr A. R. Hedgecock.

The Thorkel is 34ft long with a beam of lift and a draft of 4ft. It is powered by a diesel engine and is designed to operate at a speed of 10 knots. It has a kauri deck but its hull, constructed on the longitudinal system, consists of three skins of treated white pine. It is equipped with an echo sounder. It has a fuel capacity of 200 gallons. There is accommodation for two persons.
