Obituary

MR W. H. DARBY Mr William Henry Darby, who till his retirement in 1949, had spent 25 years in Christchurch as a probation officer, died in Christchurch last week. He was 84. Mr Darby was educated at the Woolston School and after taking a trade qualification, served in the Royal Navy for a number of years. After serving in World War I he farmed in North Auckland for a time but in the mid-1920s joined the probation service of the Justice Department. Mr Darby was a keen horticulturist and had close links with both the Returned Services’ Association and the brass bands organisation. He acted as marshal at a number of brass band contests.
