President Nguyen Van Thieu dismissed one of Ms senior advisers, Mr Huynh Van Trong,' more than two weeks ago because of reports that the National Liberation Front had been trying to communicate with him, a Government spokesman said today, e “He was fired, relieved of Ms functions more than two weeks ago," the spokesman said.

Mr Trong who has been questioned by police, was a special assistant at the Presidency with no specific or permanent assignment, be said. Official sources said that Mr Trong was summoned to the national police headquarters for questioning on Saturday.. He has since been under surveillance at his home.

He was appointed a member of President Thieu’s inner circle of advisers more than a year ago.
