Sunday Concert By Quartet
The New Prague Quartet of the Univer-, sity of Canterbury will present its third recital
in the Ngaio March Theatre, Ham, on Sunday. The concert will begin at 8.30 p.m., a quarter of an hour later than usual.
Once again, the quartet will perform a work by the Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak—this time the String Quartet, Op. 105. This is a late work, written in 1895, after the “New World” Symphony. The middle work of the programme is the quartet, published in 1910, by the French composer, Maurice Ravel. This composition, and Debussy’s earlier quartet, show the effect of so-called Impressionist school of musical expres-
sion. The sound-colours of the ensemble are the main means of expression, although Ravel uses the traditional abstract forms for his music. Mozart's quartet K. 428 will begin the programme. This is the third of six “Haydn Quartets,” written in the early 1780 s and dedicated to the old master by the young Mozart.
