Christ’s College Defeated
Two tries in as many minutes during the third quarter of a scrambling in-ter-school Rugby match enabled Otago Boys' High School to turn a 3-8 halftime deficit into a 14-11 win over Christ’s College in Christchurch yesterday. Although Otago had enjoyed a marked territorial and possession advantage in the first half it showed little imagination on attack. The Otago rucking and scrum work had more cohesion than that of College but the ball seldom travelled the back line with any confidence and most moves fell down because of handling or passing errors. Only in the last 10 minutes before half-time did Christ’s College capitalise on the brisk breeze that was favouring it The teams were level, 3-3 a runaway try by the College centre, M. B. Thompson, ’after an interception, and a penalty goal by the Otago full-back, T. Law—when College made the first clean passing move for R. W. Fulton to score after joining the line from full-back. Otago regained its earlier domination early in the sec-
ond half and another penalty by T. Law, a try by bis brother, J. Law, and another by the wing, A. Lloyd, sent Otago six points clear and it appeared set to win comfortably. Otago's tries were rather fortuitous and were not an indication of improved play by its backs.
Christ’s College improved its play over the final stages and twice came within yards of the Otago line, helped territorially by numerous penalties. From one Fulton kicked a goal—only his second success in seven attempts.
Scorers: For Otago, J. Law and Lloyd scored tries; T. Law kicked two penalties and a conversion. Thompson and Fulton scored tries of Christ's College and Fulton kicked a penalty and a conversion.
