Close Title Fight
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. Johnny Famechon, of Australia, last night retained hie world feather-weight title by a one-point margin over his unlucky Japanese challenger. Fighting Harada, at Sydney. In a sensational end to the 15-round contest the American referee—and sole judge—Mr W. Pep, announced the fight a draw by placing both hands on the boxers’ heads.
But seconds later an official announcement over the public address system said the referee's card would be checked.
As it was being checked a storm of boos from the crowd of 10,000 greeted the champion, who was knocked down three times by the aggressive Japanese. Then the ringmaster. Mr R. Connolly, announced that the check of Mr Pep's score-card showed Famechon winning 70 points to Harada's 69. The bustling Harada rocked Famechon with hard righta throughout the fight.
In the final round, Harada chased Famechon around the ring trying to finish him off, but the champion, still jabbing with his left and acoring, lasted gamely.
