SINKING CITY

Bid To Save Venice

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) VENICE, July 27.

Experts from 14 countries yesterday agreed on a plan of action to save Venice from sinking into the sea. The experts, meeting under the auspices of the Italian Government and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (U.N.E.5.C.0.), unanimously adopted a U.N.E.S.C.O. report on the city’s problems. The report called for scientific studies to protect the city against natural or artificial dangers, measures to preserve and restore its monuments and works of art, and steps to revive its economic life. The committee also asked' the Italian Government to appoint a competent person to co-ordinate national action to save the city. Venice has sunk 5.3 inches since 1908 and, unless something is done, two thirds of the city is expected to be under water by 1990.
