Malvern Towns Likely To Have Bottled Milk
Residents of the Malvern Waddington, Sheffield, Springfield. Coalgate, Glentunnel and Hororata may have to pay slightly more for will probably switch from raw milk delivered to billies at residents’ front gates to pasteurised milk delivered from Christchurch in bottles. Details of the proposed new supply will be worked out at a meeting of the county council and representatives of the
New. Zealand Milk Board and the Canterbury Dairy Farmers’ Cooperative, Ltd, on Monday . County milk supplies, are drawn from three local producers, one of whom has notified the bouncil that he will not renew his contract for town supply at the end of next month. ' The County Clerk (Mr B. W. Perrin) said yesterday that the withdrawal of one supplier had made the whole question of milk supply .» matter of urgency to be resolved on Monday. The council had intended to hold a referendum to let ratepayers choose between raw and pasteurised milk, but this could not now be done. The New Zealand Milk Board had told the council that a decision about future supplies had to be made forthwith. Mr Perrin said that the price of milk delivered in bottles would be fixed by the board. What extra cost over 4c a pint was imposed would cover the freight charges from Christchurch.
