Son Of Alcide Bought For Kaiapoi Stud

The first son of the English St Leger winner, Alcide, bought for the South Island will join Greek God, Fountainhead and Sedgewick at Mr D. B. C. Allin’s Morwenstow Stud, Kaiapoi, for the 1970 season.

Orbiter, a three-year-old which raced four times in France earlier this year, was the first purchase made by Mr D. B. Clarkson on behalf of New Zealanders on his recent overseas tour.

Mr Clarkson’s firm, Pyne, Gould, Gulness Ltd, arranged the sale in conjunction with Wright Stephenson and Co., Ltd, and the Anglo-Irish Bloodstock Agency.

Orbiter did not race at two years because he was still developing, and after two placed runs at three years he was withdrawn from training after showing signs of soreness in a Joint.

Mr Allin’s latest purchase is expected to arrive at Morwenstaw next summer and will stand his first season in

the spring of 1970.

Alcide, the lire at Orbiter, won eight race*. Besides the St Leger he scored a notable victory in the King George VI and Queen Elisabeth Stake,. He aired the winners ot £45,000 in England last season, and well over 5100,000 abroad. One of his big winners earlier was Oncldlum, which has been syndicated and brought to New Zealand to join Agricola at Parae Stud. Agricola la a halt-brother to Alycldon, sire of Alcide. Donatello 11, paternal ancestor of Orbiter, had as his fourth dam the famous Pretty Polly, which also appears on the distaff side of the Morwenatow Stud's purchase. Orbiter’s dam i< La Montespan (by Tantieme), a winner in France and dam ot five winners including Favorlta (eight wins including the July Stakes at Newmarket and Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot). 1 Titan (Queen's Vaae, Ascot, and over £14.000), Tantarin (Cranbourne Stakes. Ascot, and over £7000) and Bex Britannicus (Clare Handicap, Newmarket, and twice in France). Orbiter’s grand-dam was by the great French sire. Tourbillon, out of Delleana, whose third dam is Pretty Polly. Another three-year-old bought for New Zealand In England was the grey, Welsh Whistler. This son of whistler (sire of 343 winners) is the first venture of Mr and Mrs Douglas Clarkson of Hawke’s Bay, In the realm of the thoroughbred. Welsh Whistler won at Wind-

sor a, a two-year-old and In his 10 starts he weighed in six times.

Welsh Whistler’s dam. Welsh Poppy, was a winner. Her sire is Abernant. a half-brother to Kurdistan, and sire of the winners ot over 900 races. The next dam. Adba, was a winner and was by The Phoenix, winner of the Irish Two Thousand Guineas and Derby. Mr Clarkson’s third purchase for New Zealand while overseas was the two-year-old brown filly, Santa Regina, whose purchaser is Mr w. L Cameron, of Dunedin.

Santa Regina is by Santa Claus, a record stake earner (£132,103) in England and Ireland as a three-year-old, from Capital Profit, by Nearco.
