Girl’s Appeal Allowed

An appeal by Laurelle Carolyn Carson, aged 17, unemployed (Mr K. N. Hampton), against a sentence of Borstal training on eight charges of theft was allowed by Mr Justice Macarthur in the Supreme Court yesterday. Carson had appealed on the ground that a sentence of Borstal training was inappropriate in that she was a first offender.

His Honour, in quashing the sentence, placed Carson on two years probation on the following conditions—that she undergo psychiatric and medical treatment, that she live and work as directed by the probation officer, that she not associate with persons of whom the probation officer disapproves, and that she pay $30.41 in restitution.
