PETITION ON CATS

Approval By Parliament (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 25. Parliament has agreed unanimously that a petition from Anna E. Jones and 4841 others, praying for legislation to prohibit the export or commercial exploitation of catskins, should be referred to the Government for “most favourable consideration.”. This is the strangest support the House can give to such a plea. The Petitions Committee, Mr G. G. Grieve (Nat., Awarua), the former owner of a pedigree Siamese cat, urged that legislation be passed “prohibiting the exporting of skins of all New Zealand cats or the use of such skins for commercial purposes.” Mr A. H. Nordmeyer (Lab., Island Bay), who had presented the petition, said the evil which the petitioners sought to remedy had not yet become apparent in the Dominion. But they feared from press reports that it could become so.
