OFFICIAL ORDER

Malaysian M.P. In Detention fN.Z.F.A.-Reutar—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR. July 24. A prominent Opposition member of Parliament who was arrested at the height of Malaysia's rioting in May has been placed in detention for the next two years under the Internal Security Act, reliable sources said today. Mr Llm Kit Slang, organising secretary of the multiracial but strongly Chinesebacked Democratic Action Patty, was arrested in Kuala Luffipur on May 18 after being expelled from Sabah. The sources said he was served with an official order 12 days ago placing him in detention for the next two years.

The Socialist International has protested at his arrest and Amnesty International has been asked by the party to look into his case. The sources said the order served on Mr Lim stated that since July last year he had acted “in a manner prejudicial to the maintenance of public order in Malaysia.” It was also alleged that in public speeches since last year he had “deliberately and intentionally aroused intense communal feeling, thereby promoting feelings of hostility between different races in Malaysia and causing suspicion and disunity to grow between them.”

Mr Lim won a seat in Malacca in the May 10 elections.
